In the Spotlight: Childish Gambino

The creative process surrounding any project in the entertainment industry takes a lot of time and energy. For this reason, it’s not unusual for an entertainer to release a song, album, TV show or movie and then going into hiding for a while. Certain artists release a project or two each year and retreat to their creative zones to work on the next step. If anyone in the industry is staying in the spotlight lately, it’s Donald Glover, more commonly known in the music industry as Childish Gambino. We’re expecting Gambino to be one of 2014’s biggest acts so if you haven’t heard his work, check it out as soon as possible!

Although Donald Glover took his first breath at Edwards Air Force Base in California and later moved to Georgia, his entrance into the entertainment industry took place in New York City. Beginning as a writer for NBC’s “30 Rock,” Glover became well known throughout the television industry, even earning a nomination in 2009’s Writers Guild of America Awards. Later that year, Glover made the transition from the writer’s table to a sitcom set. Proving his behind-the-scene talents exist in front of the camera, Glover starred alongside Joel McHale and Chevy Chase on an NBC fan-favorite, Community. Airing Thursday nights at 8pm, Donald Glover portrayed Troy, an athlete stuck in an odd study group—almost as odd as a rapper starring on a weekly sitcom.

Weekly appearance in thousands of living rooms never stopped Donald Glover from fulfilling another set of dreams: making incredible music under the stage name, Childish Gambino. A 2011 YouTube upload titled “Freaks and Geeks” would be the track to put Childish Gambino’s name on the map, capturing everyone’s attention almost immediately. If you aren’t familiar with the track, the music video is posted below so check it out for yourself. His talent is raw and real—it doesn’t get much better than that.

While constantly striving to be better, Gambino ended 2013 with a December release of his latest album, Because the Internet. Talking about the album’s purpose on his website, Childish Gambino stated, “Because the Internet was made to be the soundtrack to this new coding. The reworking of our humanity. Trying to find each other and ourselves again after the big bang.” The album, featuring hits like “3005” and “Sweatpants,” is available on iTunes so check that out!

Childish Gambino will be given the opportunity to perform new tracks live when he hits the SXSW stage in Austin, Texas on March 13th as the headlining performer at the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards. This year, Childish Gambino is nominated for the “Did it My Way Woodie,” a brand new category celebrating artists who have dared to push music’s boundaries. The show will air on MTV and mtvU on Sunday March 16th at 8pm EST with a half-hour special highlighting the big winners and best performances! SXSW won’t be your only chance to see Childish Gambino perform though—he’s getting ready to set out on tour. From February 27th until May 3rd, Gambino will be bringing the Deep Web Tour all around the United States!
