People are constantly connected to the Internet and are spending more and more time watching videos online. While our team provides practically unlimited coverage of today’s hottest music, videos included, we don’t spend enough time focusing on the directors. After unexpectedly waking up in the middle of the night (thank you, shoulder surgery aftermath), inspiration struck. Over the course of the past few weeks, you’ve most likely seen the name DerekDidIt splashed across our social media sites. Who’s Derek and what did he do? We’re all about supporting those who support us so it’s time for a WeKnowTheDJ exclusive session of WeKnowTheDirector!
Dream Urban’s Derek Davenport, better known as DerekDidIt, is arguably one of the most talented up-and-coming directors in the game right now. Don’t let his age fool you, his skills match up to and even exceed directors ten and fifteen years older than he is. Dream Urban has been supporting bossman DJ Tay James and our entire WeKnowTheDJ team so when we first heard about DerekDidIt, we immediately became interested in his budding career.
Last week, the world was introduced to Blake Kelly’s newest video, “Papi Gordo.” Justin Bieber fans recognize Kelly from his feature with Bieber on “Broken,” the opening track on WeKnowTheDJ Radio Volume 4. Unlike Kelly’s newest fans, we’ve been watching his career from the very beginning, the same way he’s watched WeKnowTheDJ grow from a simple idea to a worldwide brand. “Papi Gordo” is the first look at what we can expect from BK’s upcoming EP, The Gordo. The video includes everything we expect from Blake but who captured it exactly as planned? That’s where DerekDidIt comes into the picture—literally. “Papi Gordo” will forever hold a special place in Derek’s heart as it’s the first video where he has taken full control. That’s right, “Papi Gordo” is the first video put out to the public that has been fully directed, shot and edited by DerekDidIt! We’ve posted the video below so be sure to check that out, like always!
Less than week after “Papi Gordo” became public, DerekDidIt is back again with Gallo Deuce’s “Tokyo Drifting.” About a month ago, DJ Tay James posted a picture on his Instagram stating that Gallo Deuce is up next and he definitely wasn’t lying. That’s one thing everyone should know about Taylor James—he knows talent when he sees it and isn’t afraid to share his true feelings so never underestimate his warnings. The video for “Tokyo Drifting” is responsible for sparking my inspiration and pushed me to look into DerekDidIt’s career. The black-and-white video includes camerawork so incredible that I’m not sure my writing can do it justice. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so check out the video below and be prepared to be impressed!
This is definitely just the beginning for DerekDidIt and I can guarantee that his name will be everywhere in no time! I can confirm that he’s been finishing up a video for “Thuggin,” Blake Kelly’s next track, expected in the near future. Whether this is the first time you’ve heard of DerekDidIt or you’ve been an avid supporter, I promise this isn’t the last time you’ll be seeing him on weknowthedj.com. Who knows, you might even catch him in an exclusive interview soon! Be sure to stay up-to-date on all of Derek’s projects by following him on Twitter at @DerekDidIt. Don’t forget to send us a tweet at @weknowthedj to share your thoughts on the upcoming director!
