During a brutal New York winter that seemed longer than most, an excessive amount of time was spent watching movies—after all, there’s not much better than having an excuse to stay bundled up on the couch with your favorite blanket and some junk food for two hours! As time progresses, movies seem to get better and better, something that we’re definitely not complaining about. Whether it was anxiety during Catching Fire or hysterical laughter during 21 Jump Street (btw- SO excited for 22 Jump Street!!) chances are you’ve recently seen a move that ranks pretty high on your favorites list. Instead of spending my Sunday night doing homework (hello, end of the semester overload), last night was all about the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. A couple of award categories included Best Male Performance and Best Female Performance but at WeKnowTheDJ, we were more interested in on-stage, not big screen, performances.
Toward the middle of the award show, it was finally the moment we were waiting for—Eminem and Rihanna! Their spectacular performance was a perfect mixture of “blast from the past” and “a look into the future.” This wasn’t the first time the pair hit the MTV stage together (Rihanna made a surprise appearance during Eminem’s set at the 2010 VMAs) and it certainly won’t be the last! If last night’s performance confirmed anything, it’s “I definitely need to find a way to get some tickets for their Monster Tour this summer!” Their performance started with Rihanna’s silhouette against a smoky red background, forcing the world to focus on her incredible vocals. As Eminem appeared, things heated up on-stage as he spit his bars at the crowd. The energy flowing through the crowd throughout the entire performance proved once again that Eminem and Rihanna are a force to be reckoned with! I’ve posted the performance video below so check that out and go grab some tickets to their Monster Tour, kicking off on August 7th.
Later on in the night, Ellie Goulding and Zedd brought out Divergent’s softer side with a performance of “Beating Heart” and “Find You.” Beginning the performance, Goulding sang along to Zedd’s simple piano accompaniment as they gracefully performed “Beating Heart.” Flashing lights and explosions as Miriam Bryant and Matthew Koma appeared with a rendition of Zedd’s “Find You” broke the subtleness. Unlike the film, the MTV Movie Awards performance focused on vulnerability among a night of celebration.
Last but CERTAINTLY not least… my favorite performance of the entire night! While this one didn’t feature music or lyrics, there were plenty of screaming girls! Right now, on behalf of girls all over the world, I’d like to thank Rita Ora for ripping Zac Efron’s shirt off during his acceptance speech! And just for your continuous viewing pleasure…
Now that another award show has come and gone, it’s time to mentally prepare for the next one and I’m anxious to see how it will outshine the 2014 MTV Movie Awards! By now y’all should know how this works- we brought you coverage on the show’s hottest performances so now it’s your turn to send us tweets at @weknowthedj to share your thoughts!
