In terms of new music, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve been spoiled over the past few months. I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure it’s only a matter of time before my headphones explode from overuse! Although I really shouldn’t take any credit for the release of any new music, I’m going to pretend that my favorite artists are putting out smashes because November just happens to be my birthday month. Let a girl dream, alright?
Working for a website like WeKnowTheDJ, I’m expected to have an understanding of what’s going on in the music industry. Time and time again, it seems that people ask who my favorite artist is at the moment or who is going to be the next person to “blow up.” Well, thanks to a much-needed schoolwork procrastination session, I thought now would be an appropriate time to share some of my favorites with all of our dedicated readers.
So drumroll please… Below, in no particular order (mainly because my “real” favorite changes every other hour!), is my Top 10 Artists of the Week!
Drake: Someone should probably tell Drake that you’re supposed to receive gifts on your birthday, not give them! It’s been a few weeks since Drizzy gave us “How Bout Now,” “6 God” and “Heat of the Moment” on his special day but my obsession with all three tracks is still very real. Then again, I still find myself jamming out to old school “Over” Drake as often as I’m jamming out to “0 to 100/The Catch Up.” There’s something about Drake’s delivery and unique style that will always earn him a spot on my favorites chart. I don’t know about you but I’m definitely counting down the days until Spring 2015!
Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson: I don’t know if I should count this as two separate artists or a single collaboration but I do know that I’m absolutely blown away by Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson’s latest project! On November 11th, after months of excessive teasing, Bieber and Cody finally gave their fans a sneak peek at what they’ve been working on with the release of a new single titled “Home to Mama.” My final verdict seems to be one that everyone is agreeing with—they KILLED it!! Although I can confirm that this is one of many collaborations that the two heartthrobs have completed, I can’t really give you any other details without getting in trouble. I have two words for you though—Stay tuned.
Selena Gomez: Well, I think it’s official: taking a break in the beginning of 2014 was the best decision Selena Gomez has ever made! There’s no denying that her newest track, “The Heart Wants What It Wants” is an absolute jam! Okay, maybe it’s not one of those tracks you’ll be blasting with your windows down but it’s getting colder outside so I’ll be keeping my windows up! The slowed down, emotional track gives us an inside look at what’s been going on in Selena’s mind over the past year or so and honestly, this is just one of those tracks that almost everyone can relate to.
Ariana Grande featuring Big Sean: I don’t know if I’m biased toward their teamwork or if it’s because I think they’re one of Hollywood’s cutest couples but I’m absolutely obsessed with Ariana Grande and Big Sean’s “Best Mistake” collaboration! The track, which is featured on Ariana’s latest album, isn’t the pair’s first collaboration and it certainly isn’t their last but right now, it’s my favorite! We’ve already received confirmation that Ariana will be featured on Big Sean’s upcoming album in what he’s describing as a track that’s aimed more toward his style of music so yeah, I’m excited about that one!
Jake Miller: Move over Alex from Target, we’re only concerned with Jake from Publix! Okay fine, Jake Miller traded his Publix apron for a microphone and spot on the iTunes charts but still, you get my point! On November 4th, after becoming Warner Brother’s newest artist, Jake Miller released his new EP, titled Lion Heart, and it has been played on my phone more times than I’d like to admit! The five-track EP includes tracks “First Flight Home,” “Party in the Penthouse,” “Ghost,” “Dazed and Confused” and “Lion Heart,” and if you haven’t picked a favorite yet, you’re really missing out!
Mike Stud: It’s no secret that Mike Stud has become the most-played artist on my iTunes library since his latest album’s July release. Although I’ve been listening to Closer on repeat, I’m a huge fan of the new music that Mike has been releasing on SoundCloud! A couple of weeks ago, I introduced you to Goin’ Up but on November 10th, Mike decided to give us another gift—this one titled “Toast” and I’m definitely toasting to this one and to Mike Stud’s future success! He’s currently killing the game on his Closer tour and plans on doing so for the next couple of months while still giving us music to enjoy for hours on end! So for that, thank you Mike!
Nicky Fresh: Back in the beginning of September, I introduced you guys to an up-coming artist who goes by Nicky Fresh with an exclusive interview and the feedback has been nothing short of incredible. Speaking of incredible, Nicky Fresh has returned with a remix to Lil Wayne and Drake’s “Believe Me” and an accompanying video. I was considering keeping Nicky on friendship timeout because he “forgot” to invite me to the video shoot but he definitely redeemed himself with this free verse. But, that’s not all—Nicky Fresh’s newest mixtape, Road To The Top, will be available on Nicky’s 21st birthday, November 19th!
Round2Crew: If you know us, you know we take great pride in introducing new talent. Back in December 2013, we introduced you to Round2Crew and they’ve been living up to all of our expectations ever since. Most recently, in preparation for their November 17th EP release, Chase and Pape posted a brand new cover and plain and simple, it’s on repeat! The Ohio natives covered 5 Seconds of Seconds’ “Amnesia” and the accompanying video is enough to make anyone wish they were spending fall days with Pape and Chase in Ohio.
Dylan Holland: Another WeKnowTheDJ and personal favorite is Dylan Holland, who also hails from Ohio. Dylan’s been keeping us entertained with covers and originals but his latestymight be my favorite to date. Back in the middle of September, Dylan released his “Don’t Tell ‘Em” DeeZmix before releasing the video on November 8th. If you haven’t heard the remix yet, you’re missing out and I’m giving you fair warning, be prepared to get addicted! His personal touches to the already-addictive track adds more character and even more reason to fall in love with Dylan Holland’s music!
Ryan Bronson: Last but certainly not least, an up-and-coming artist from upstate New York who has definitely caught my attention. A random Twitter follow introduced me to Ryan Bronson, an artist who is clearly trying to create a lane of his own. Bronson’s debut album, Reflections, hit iTunes earlier this fall and the response has been quite impressive for someone who is clearly starting to find their footing in an extremely competitive industry. This might only be the beginning for Ryan Bronson but I have a feeling he’s just getting started.
Well, now that you have a brief understanding on what’s being played through my headphones at all hours of the day, it’s time for you to let me know your favorites! Send us a tweet at @weknowthedj and share some music with us—who knows, maybe your favorite will make an appearance on my next list!
