A Night in NYC with Huey Mack

If you ask ILoveMakonnen, it’s the club that goes up on Tuesday but if you ask Huey Mack, the Studio at Webster Hall in New York City was the place going up this past Tuesday night. Simply overlooking the fact that I work 9 to 5 this summer, Yours Truly was at Webster Hall on Tuesday to watch a boy from West Virginia take over the iconic New York City venue. Let me sum up the night in a few short words: If Huey Mack performs in your city, you need to attend the show. Thank me later.

Like many concert nights, this one wasn’t without miscommunication but as the number of events I attend increases, I’m learning that’s simply how this industry works. In a place as massive as New York City, guest lists fill quickly but after a few frantic phone calls, I found myself backstage to witness the incredible artistry that accompanies Huey Mack in every city. You know that somewhat cliché saying, “time flies when you’re having fun?” Well, that’s exactly how I would describe Huey’s stop in New York. We arrived at the venue around 7:30pm and four hours passed in what felt like twenty minutes. But trust me, there was no shortage of fun.

Between a few genuine conversations, talented opening acts, a handful of famous friends and Huey’s party-starting set, there was plenty going on in the somewhat crammed Studio at Webster Hall. There were a ton of laughs and memories made backstage but I have a feeling even more memories were created in the crowd. As I looked out at the crowd during Huey’s set, I was impressed at how rowdy things were getting on a weeknight, especially as Huey performed “Favorite Song,” “Cruella De Vil” and his remix to Carly Rae’s “Call Me Maybe.”

If you’ve been keeping up with Huey on social media, you know he has asked Cam Meekins, Futuristic and TJ Hickey to open each show of the Things Change tour. Each stop also features local artists, giving up-and-coming acts the chance to experience nights much like the ones their idols live on a daily basis. For those of you wondering what it’s like to travel on the Things Change Tour, check out Justin Escalona’s “A Day on Tour” video, posted below.

Earlier in the summer, we featured a piece about Huey’s newest album, Things Change—for those of you who may have missed that article, it can be found at http://weknowthedj.com/2015/06/things-are-changing-for-huey-mack/. Earlier in the summer, Huey also sat down with Downtown Magazine NYC to talk about his show at Webster Hall where he described what fans could expect from the August 4th gig. He said, “Man, it’s just fun, plain and simple. We like to party with everyone else and just give them a very fast-paced, energetic show that leaves them like woah, what a night.” Well Huey, I think it’s safe to say you accomplished that and more! Also, Huey, I can’t thank you enough for such a great night, see you soon!

Huey’s Things Change Tour is continuing through this weekend so if you live in Detroit, Cincinnati or Indianapolis, I hope you take my advice and make an appearance when Huey stops in your city. For those of you who already saw Huey on tour or if you’re as obsessed with Things Change as much as we are, send us a tweet at @weknowthedj and let us know!
