Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?”

Before we get into details, logistics, lyrics, beats, videos or reactions, let’s just start this article off with six simple words… The kid has done it again.

While the rest of the music industry tries to successfully pull off surprise releases, Justin Bieber decided to do things a little differently over the past month. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 30 days, you know Bieber has recruited some of his famous friends to help countdown to today. Over the past 4 weeks, 76 musicians, models, actors, actresses, personalities, athletes and canines have taken over social media with signs (literally) pointing their followers in one direction—straight to Justin’s new single, “What Do You Mean?”

In true Bieber fashion, Justin paved his own path in the weeks leading up to the single’s release. On Wednesday August 19, Justin sent Twitter DMs to 49 lucky fans but these messages weren’t Bieb’s usual smiley face—each message sent on August 19 was a piece of an incredibly complex puzzle. Each clue included an image of a clock and a line from “What Do You Mean?” Within moments, Justin’s fans realized each clock image featured a different time. Seconds later, Justin tweeted “check ur dms and the time on the clock 😉 put it together.” Well, the Beliebers did it and 9 days before the single’s release, the world knew the highly anticipated song’s lyrics.

Clocks weren’t just randomly selected for the Twitter images—the theme continues through the entire song as a cliché clock tick provides a consistency in the track’s beat. “What Do You Mean?” premiered on radio stations worldwide at 7am EST and based on our Twitter timeline, it seems stations in almost every country were anxiously counting down the moments until they could “be the first” to play the track on the air. There’s no doubt the kid has come a long way since the days of busking and traveling in a van to almost every radio station, hoping they’d give him a chance. The single is available on iTunes at https://itun.es/us/4maN9 and we suggest downloading it immediately! There’s no doubt that we’re jamming to “What Do You Mean?” until November 13.

Remember “November 13.” It’s going to be an absolutely massive day simply because it’s the day Justin’s NEW ALBUM arrives! As “What Do You Mean?” was playing on the radio for the first time, Justin’s account on Fahlo shared the super exciting news! The still-unnamed album will hit shelves on the second Friday in November but it’s available for pre-order right now on Justin’s Fahlo and at http://justinbieber.shop.bravadousa.com/store/. And it’s not just the album on pre-order, some of the bundles also include early access to tickets and a call or text from Justin—go check them out immediately!

As you’re waiting for more information about the upcoming album, don’t forget the official music video is also on its way! But first, we have the “What Do You Mean?” lyric video for you right now! The black and white video focuses on Justin’s passion of skateboarding and features none other than skate legend Ryan Sheckler and Chelsea Castro. Since its release earlier this morning, the lyric video has gained hundreds of thousands of views and when you watch it once, you’ll understand why. Then you’ll go watch it 10 more times. Trust me.

We’d act surprised that “What Do You Mean?” hit Number 1 on the iTunes charts literally moments after it was released but c’mon, it’s Justin Bieber we’re talking about—of course the track took the top spot! iTunes isn’t the only place that the 4-minute track is claiming the peak position—“What Do You Mean?” has been on the top of every Billboard social media chart for the past few weeks, long before its official release. How is that possible? Well, in the 30 days leading up to August 28, #WhatDoYouMean was tweeted nearly 100 MILLION times. To put it simply, the world is talking! Die-hard fans and die-hard haters are talking about Bieber today (like always) but for the first time (possibly ever), they’re agreeing on one thing—“What Do You Mean?” is an absolute hit!

There’s no denying that Bieber is back.

If it seems like the media has been talking about Justin’s return for the past 6 months, it’s because we have been. Before we talk about Justin’s future plans, let’s rewind really quickly to Justin’s 21st birthday and the Comedy Central Roast heard around the world. At the end of the telecast, Justin said, “I’m looking forward to being someone you can all look at and be proud of, someone you can smile at and see some of yourself in. Someone close to me once said, it’s how you rise from a fall that truly defines you as a man. I’m excited for that challenge.” Well, Justin, we’re all proud of you and so happy to see you’re back on your feet. You know we have always been on your side but now, we’re positive the rest of the world is also standing behind you.

There’s no doubt that Bieber’s very public apology served its purpose but we can’t live in the past so let’s look at what’s coming up in the next few months. If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen Team Bieber’s teasing about how “What Do You Mean?” is only the beginning and they’re right. With an album set for a mid-November release date, Justin is going to be pretty busy over the next few months. Up first is a performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards this Sunday. His last VMA performance was a medley of “Baby,” “Somebody to Love” and “U Smile” back in 2010 so yeah, Sunday night should be pretty exciting!

When we reappear next week with our recap of the VMAs, Justin will be heading out on a promo-tour for “What Do You Mean?” He’s already scheduled to appear in New York City for a taping of The Tonight Show and The Today Show’s Concert Series plus an appearance in Los Angeles for The Ellen Show’s premiere week. Who knows where else he’ll pop up! For the time being, as we anxiously await the next announcement, we’ll be listening to “What Do You Mean?” on repeat because starting today, the track will be taking over the radio and clubs everywhere. While you’re practicing your “What Do You Mean?” dance moves, we’ll be waiting to hear your opinions on the four-minute song. Send us a tweet at @weknowthedj, we want to talk all things Bieber!
