In the Spotlight: Kid Ink

As a teenager making beats in after-school music programs, Brian Todd Collins found his footing. Today, you know Collins as Kid Ink, a tattooed rapper taking over the music industry. Over the past five years, Kid Ink (@Kid_Ink) has released five mixtapes, one EP and tow studio albums, giving him plenty of experience and exposure. Ink signed with music industry powerhouse RCA Records right before releasing his January 2014 album, My Own Lane. The twenty-eight year old from Los Angeles has been touring the world but this week proved to be an extremely busy one for the rapper.

Have you ever dreamed of sitting in on a studio session with two of today’s hottest artists? Well, I’m not a fairy godmother but with a little help from director Dan Centrone, your dream is one step closer to becoming reality. On Thursday July 31, Kid Ink and Maejor Ali (@MAEJORALI) opened their studio doors to the Internet with the release of their “I Don’t Care” music video.

The video, posted below, features Kid Ink and Maejor Ali rotating between the studio’s soundboard and recording booth, giving fans an inside look on what a recording session looks like. While I can’t help you sit in on a studio session, the “I Don’t Care” video is a close second! When speaking of the track’s visual component, Kid Ink said, “I dropped this video to inspire people to chase their dreams.” Well, that’s one lesson we can’t disagree with!

On July 31, there was enough of Kid Ink to go around. After teaming up with Maejor Ali, Ink joined Ty Dolla $ign and Travis Barker (@ on a remix of MAGIC!’s “Rude.” The remix, produced by DJ E-Man and DJ Ikon, adds raunchy lyrics to the song’s original PG rating. Between Barker’s beat makeover and Kid Ink and Ty Dolla $ign’s lyrics, the three artists and two DJs add their own spin to the chart-topping track.

The remix adds new layers to the already-popular song, giving it a fresh, urban makeover. The trio keeps the chorus and original beachy vibes but Barker adds a bass thumb to the track, giving it a club-friendly feel. Bossman DJ Tay James is touring the country and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if you hear him spin the “Rude Remix.” Kid Ink and Dolla $ign turn the track’s tables from a disapproving father to an out-of-control daughter. Check out the remix’s Audiomack file below!

Is Kid Ink on your bucket list of concerts to attend? If so, you’re in luck! He’s currently touring the United States and heads overseas at the end of the month.
