Mike Stud’s “Goin’ Up”

Since YouTube’s creation in February 2005, we have watched countless video—some of which we have forgotten within seconds and others that we will always remember. I’ll never forget one of the “first” viral videos I had ever seen, it’s titled “Drinking Out of Cups” and hit YouTube when I was in seventh grade. If you haven’t seen the video, you’re missing out and you need to watch it as soon as possible; it’s an audio recording of a guy who is in a closet, tripping on LSD and it’s easily one of the funniest videos in the entire world!

Sorry, I’m getting off topic but I promise my reminiscing on old-school YouTube has a purpose! At 7pm on October 26, Mike Stud posted a new song on SoundCloud and needless to say, I was surprised to hear a sample from “Drinking Out of Cups.” Like the “Drinking Out of Cups” video, Stud’s new track, appropriately titled “Goin’ Up,” is one that everyone needs to become familiar with. The two-and-a-half minute track, produced by Louis Bell, comes right before Stud embarks on his highly anticipated Closer tour!

Since its release, the track has been played over 78,250 times—a statistic that seems to be growing by the minute. Surprising? Not really. Although Mike’s incredibly loyal fan base is playing the track on repeat, it’s also grabbing the attention of people who might know nothing about Mike Stud or his music. The track’s production, perfectly crafted by Bell, sets the mood early, getting listeners prepared for the next two minutes (or 20 minutes, depending on how many times they put the track on repeat!). And of course, it wouldn’t be a Mike Stud song without his notorious “Uhyuu!” No, not “Yuuup,” it’s “Uhyuu” and only “Uhyuu!”

After a quick sampling from “Drinking Out of Cups,” the track, posted below, dives right into Mike’s upcoming plans. Rapping “I got cities to see, I got parties to throw, I’m getting closer, started over now I’m starting to blow,” Mike makes reference to his transition from All-American baseball player to his upcoming Closer tour. What about his current radio success? Well, he also raps, “And now that radio started playing me so, Oh what a feeling” and yes Mike, we’re just as excited about the fact that Closer is taking over the radio stations—congratulations!

“Goin’ Up” doesn’t just magnify Stud’s rap skills, it also proves that the guy can sing! Okay, maybe he won’t win American Idol any time soon but he sings a lot better than most rappers so yes, I’m impressed! He continues the track rapping, “Yeah I’m up next, believe that, said that shit then I mean that.” If you remember one thing from this article, I want it to be this: Never doubt Mike Stud. First and foremost, he’s an athlete, which means he 100% understands working hard in order to achieve greatness. As he continues on this journey, I have no doubt that he’s the one who is “up next.” Come talk to me in a couple of months, I never mind hearing “You were right, Meg.”

As the two-and-a-half minute song comes to an end, I only have one complaint. I wasn’t ready for it to be over. But, don’t worry—if I know Mike Stud, I know he’s constantly working hard on new music. Don’t believe me? I have confirmation from Stud himself! The same night that “Goin’ Up” was posted, Mike tweeted “No matter what… I’ll continue to give y’all different styles of FREE music to jam to… I don’t care about a ‘genre’ … Just listen.” Well Mike, we’re listening and we’re excited for what’s next!

So… What’s next? Mike Stud’s Closer tour begins on November 2 in Massachusetts and runs until December 28 in New York. Hitting the stage with various artists—such as J.Cole, Jeremih, Kid Ink, Tinashe, Clinton Sparks, Jake Miller, Colette Carr, YG and OCD: Moosh & Twist—every show is guaranteed to be memorable!
